Judge Roberto Cañas presides over Dallas County Criminal Court No. 10, which handles only domestic violence cases. His court is a U.S. Department of Justice Domestic Violence Mentor Court because it exhibits best practices and serves as a model for other courts to follow. Judge Cañas serves on the City of Dallas Domestic Violence Executive Task Force, regularly trains other judges on DV issues, and has worked to improve the legal system’s response to DV. He was awarded the 2013 Champion of Human Rights Award from Mosaic Family Services and the 2009 Make A Difference Award from New Beginning Center.
